Recognize and Understand The Right Handling of Pain.

Jakarta, 2 July 2015 – Pain is an unpleasant condition frequently experienced in daily life. As one of the commonest complaints, pain is one of the most general reasons for which patients search medical aid. Pain can occur along with disease process or several diagnostic investigation and medication. Each individual has complex and various perceptions of a pain which may be different from those of others though the injury or the disease is relatively the same.

dr. Jimmy F. A. Barus, M.Sc., Sp.S, Neurologist of the Neurology Department of the Medical Faculty of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, said, “Pain is a unpleasant sensorial and emotional experience related to a tissue damage and a potential tissue damage that makes an individual fell miserable, suffering, and uncomfortable, which will finally disturb his/her daily activities, psychology and so forth. Normally, pain occurs due to defense and protection mechanism of the body to tissue damage. Pain perception of each individu is subjective, depending on different emotional conditions of males and females, different ages of the individu, previous emotional experiences, and pain tolerance levels which may vary for each individu.”

Further, dr. Jimmy F. A. Barus, M.Sc., Sp.S, explained, “In term of duration, pain can be differentiated between acute pain and chronic pain. Mostly, acute pain is limited or will heal in several days or weeks (usually less than 1 month – 3 months). Meanwhile, chronic pain is a permanent pain experienced for more than 3 months after the pain comes. In several cases, acute pain which is not properly handled will develop to be chronic pain. Chronic pains can decrease patients’ quality of life because they decrease working capability and cause sleep disorders, anxiety, frustration, and depression. They can reduce appetite, cause adverse effects to attitudes and lifestyles, and dependence on drugs and medical treatment. Therefore, pains should be properly handled and should not be ignored. Otherwise, they will develop to be chronic and serious pains or even cause depression.”

Pain is a common condition. Pain can be considered as a “warning sign” about a disease process in the body. Therefore, currently, pain has been treated as one of the vital sign (the 5th vital sign) like hypertension, pulse and breath frequencies, and body temperatures. According to dr. Jimmy, in general, pains can be handled pharmaceutically and non-pharmaceutically. Pharmaceutical handling involves the use of drugs such as anti-inflammation, opiate, and adjuvant drugs.   Meanwhile, non-pharmaceutical handling involves physical and/or psychological interventions such as physiotherapy and relaxation, among others. In certain cases, surgery or certain procedures are required to handle pains.

Dr. Jimmy added, ”People face a lot of choices of painkiller drugs in the market while they have to use those drugs carefully and wisely. For daily light pain, they can use freely sold analgesic drugs. However, it is highly recommended to see a doctor if the pain show no improvement. Avoid overuse of analgesic drugs widely available in the market to get rid of undesireable side effects.  “It would be better if, to obtain the right painkiller, one consults a doctor. To get effective and efficient painkiller, a doctor will evaluate characteristics and types of the pains and make sure that there is no accompanying disease experienced by the patient. The use of painkiller should be as recommended by the doctor to avoid overuse. Patients’ compliance is very important in pain medication for the sake of effective handling of pain and to avoid overuse, underuse, or misuse of analgesic,” said dr. Jimmy.
