Jakarta, 26 November, 2014.  PT Pfizer Indonesia (Pfizer) will once again hold Pfizer Press Circle (PPC) with the topic will be “Mental Health: How to overcome stress?”. Data of Basic Health Research (Riskesda) 2013 – issued by the Health Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia – according to which about 6% of people at the ages of 15 years and above and one or two of 1000 people in Indonesia experience serious mental and emotional disorders.[1] Mental health expert, Dr. Danardi Sosrosumihardjo, SpKJ (K), The Indonesian Psychiatric Association (PDSKJI), said that “Awareness of stress and appropriate character building to face stress (Defense Mechanism) play important roles in maintaining mental health.” Dr. Danardi Sosrosumihardjo, SpKJ (K) explained further that “Each person has his/her own characters and various defense mechanism which will form a certain pattern in facing stress. If the characters are positive and the defense mechanism is appropriate, the individual will be able to cope with the stress properly. But, when the contrary is occurred, anxiety/tension will appear due to the stress.”

Widyaretna Buenastuti, Public Affairs & Communication Director of PT Pfizer Indonesia said, “Pfizer supports the preventive and promotion approaches in improving mental health of people. As one of its supports, Pfizer takes mental health as one of the topics in Pfizer Press Circle, presenting mental health experts and discussing ‘how to overcome stress’ to provide discourses on preventive approaches to mental health which can be applied in daily life.”

Human beings are considered health mentally when they feel healthy and happy and are able to take themselves, others and the surrounding conditions as they are and have high optimism in creating better future. However, when they have begun to complain, to feel distressed, to protest too much, and to experience cognitive/emotional impairment, it can be said that they are begin to suffer a mental illness. In doing their lives, they will grow, change or move, and interact with other parties. To face such dynamic life, each person will have his/her own defense mechanism (ways to response any event) .  Dr. Danardi Sosrosumihardjo, SpKJ (K) said that “there are people who choose to use positive defense mechanism such as sublimation/substitution and humor – facing problems with anecdotes. There are also those who respond problem projection – blaming others, or even introjections- blaming oneself.” Dr. Danardi Sosrosumihardjo, SpKJ (K) also reminded, “To maintain mental health, in facing a problem, we should need to recognize the way how we treat a problem and which defense mechanism we frequently uses. We can study all of them, and they can be led to positive characters.”

Widyaretna Buenastuti, Public Affairs & Communication Director of PT Pfizer Indonesia added, “Pfizer has a vision to lead through innovations for healthier Indonesia. Actually, it is that vision which has driven Pfizer to have a commitment to run all of its activities and operation for the sake of healthier Indonesian people.
