Cochlea Implant Technology, the Latest Solution to Hearing Impairment in Indonesia

Jakarta, 24 January 2017 – In Indonesia, hearing impairment is among the health issues that requires special attention. Based on the data published by WHO, 1 out of 1,000 babies in Indonesia are born with a hearing impairment . For children, hearing impairment have serious implications towards their mental and intellectual development as they lose the ability to hear and furthermore limit their ability to speak and learn.

Director of Medical and Nursing of Kencana Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Dr. dr. Ratna Dwi Restuti, Sp.THT-KL(K) said, “The prevalence rate of hearing impairment in Indonesia has reached 4,6% and it is estimated that the number of people suffering hearing-impairment has reached 9,6 million, which places Indonesia with the second highest number people suffering hearing-impaired in the world. Early detection of hearing impairment is very important in order to determine proper treatment. Furthermore, Dr. dr. Ratna Dwi Restuti, Sp.THT-KL(K) said, “Therefore RSCM Kencana as a hospital with internationally-recognized and integrated health services, collaborates with Cochlear and Kasoem Hearing and Speech Centre to provide a comprehensive solution to hearing impairment through cochlea implant technology.

The cochlea is the auditory organ which sends message to the auditory nerve and the brain. Any sound caught by the ear is first sent to the earlobe and is then to the cochlea. Cochlea surgery involves implanting electrode inside the hearing organ containing auditory nerves located in the inner ear. This electrode replaces cochlea’s functions as the hearing device. This surgery is meant for people with deafness that cannot be helped with the regular hearing aid. As such, cochlea implant improves the inner ear optimally which in turns restores the patient’s ability to hear.

Staf of E.N.T – Head and Neck Surgery Department of RSCM – FKUI, dr. Harim Priyono, SpTHT-KL(K) added, “If not properly treated, hearing impairment may cause adverse effects to one’s cognitive, psychological, and social development. Therefore it is very important to make more people aware of the issue and understand proper solutions to hearing impairment.”

Further, dr. Harim Priyono, SpTHT-KL(K), “Cochlea implantation has been done many times in Indonesia. In RSCM Kencana since 2009 to date we have handled only 80 cochlea implant patients. Cochlea implantation in RSCM Kencana is a team work and implements procedures that involves multidisciplinary of medical and non-medical knowledge, such as Neurology Specialist (for children and adults), Internal Medicine Specialists (for adults), Radiology Specialists, Anesthesia Specialists, Children’s Development Specialists, Clinic Pharmacists, and Children Psychiatric Specialist (psychologist). Additionally, sound adjustments are to be made after the surgery to ensure that cochlea implantation has been done properly. Months after implantation, adjustment session will be dine to maintain the quality of the sound received by the ear.”

Country Manager of Cochlear for Indonesia, Vietnam dan Filipina, Bambang Nur Indrawan explained, “Cochlear Indonesia is a part of Cochlear Ltd, the first and biggest implant company in the world.
