1 Of 6 Babies in Indonesia Born Prematurely

Premature Babies Need Serious Care and Handling

JAKARTA, 10 September 2014 – Premature, or preterm, babies have high risks and, therefore, need high alert. But, due to lack of knowledge and information, premature baby handling and cares have been suboptimal. In fact, compared to babies born at term, premature babies need serious care and attention.

Currently, the prevalence of premature birth is quite high. Every year in the world, some 15 million babies are born prematurely, and, in Indonesia 1 of 6 babies are born prematurely. (*Di Indonesia dari 100 bayi yang lahir, 15,5 bayi mengalami kelahiran prematur – Sumber: World Health Organization/WHO, November 2013).

Premature babies are babies born at the pregnancy age of less than 37 weeks (≤ 259 days) from the First Day of the Last Menstruation. Compared to those of normal babies, their brains and organs have not been sufficiently developed, putting them in high risk of medical problems.

There are three categories of premature babies classified by weight: (1) Low Birth Weight (LBW) (<2500 gram), Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) (<1500 gram), and Extremely Low Birth Weight (ELBW) (<1000 gram).

  1. Esther H. Situmeang, SpAObstetrician in Mitra Keluarga Hospital East Bekasi said, “Premature babies are at risk of death 10 times higher than babies born at term. The lesser the weight of a baby, the higher the risk will be. Therefore, special and intensive cares and handling are required. Premature infants are at greater risks for complications such as respiratory disorder, cerebral disorder, cardiac abnormalities, digestion disorder, hepatitis, and infection, among others. They are also at risk of long-term complications such as chronic lung diseases, visual impairment, hearing impairment, palsy cerebral and other growth disorders.”

Dr. Herman Trisdiantono, SpOG Obstetric and Gynaecologist in Mitra Keluarga Hospital East Bekasi said, “Causes of premature birth can be grouped into 3 categories: (1) labor complications such as uterine/cervix abnormalities, mother’s lung infection, preeclampsia, eclampsia, placenta previa, premature labor history, obesity, heart diseases, hypertension, anaemia, asthma, etc.; (2) epidemiology of pregnancy at the age of < 18 and >40, unwanted pregnancy, malnutrition of mother, smoking, drinking alcohol and illegal drugs, and excessive stress; and (3) unknown causes.”

Dr. Herman added, “In order to avoid premature birth, it is recommended to have routine check-up so that mother and baby’s health are monitored properly and to detect any abnormalities as early as possible. Not all premature birth can be prevented, but parenting consulting may curb the number of prevalence of preterm birth.”

  1. Esther added, “Premature babies need delicate and complicated handling because of the risks during the early lives of babies. Premature babies need serious cares and attention with sufficient skills, knowledge and patience. Appropriate handling will hopefully reduce the long-term impact of premature babies.”

Yunita Nanjong, S.Kom, MM – Asst. Marketing Manager of Mitra Keluarga Hospital Kelapa Gading said, ”In RS Mitra Keluarga, premature babies are specially and intensively handled under monitoring of specialists and professional and quality medical team to prevent and to cure vital organ failures. Not all hospitals have adequate facilities to handle babies. In Mitra Keluarga Hospital, babies with high risks are treated in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an intensive care room for premature babies and newborns (up to 30 days) who needs special cares because of low birth weight, respiratory disorders, and delivery problems as well as worrying signs during the first day of their lives.”
